Earlier this week, I took a train to Oregon for a few days. Seeing the coast was a bonus. The ocean in windy, rainy weather is still just as beautiful as ever. On the train ride home, I read an article in the New York Times titled The Joy of Quiet by Pico Iyer. It was wonderful as well as thought provoking. Cheers to January.

The new year inevitably always makes me think of trying new things as well as renewing ambitions. With a 2012 list started last week, I have felt encouraged and motivated already. This past week I've been fascinated by all your book recommendations in the previous post. Thank you, dear readers. One book that has stood out to me this year is Missed Connections: Love, Lost & Found by Sophie Blackall. The idea of the book is enchanting and executed beautifully. An actual missed connection ad is combined with an imaginative picture made by Sophie. Some of the people created in the pictures remind me of a vintage photograph in colour. Although it doesn't take long to read, I've found myself going back to it often to enjoy the experience once again.

I love the surprise of getting film back from the lab and seeing bursts of colours in photographs. It certainly helps when the rain hits. This week has been a good one. J. and I have been searching for a new place to call home these past couple of months and this week we found it! We are over the moon about being able to start moving at the commencement of August. There is so much light in this new abode...a window for each room. One of the things I'm looking forward to is the opportunity to scout out special used pieces. Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it's just not that good. It's trying to be good, it has potential, but it's not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn't have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I've ever met. It's gonna take awhile. It's normal to take awhile. You've just gotta fight your way through.

These longer days of light are pretty great. There have been more walks than ever and of course a pile of enjoyable reading. A few months back Nancy Pearl (a Seattle Librarian) recommended a book titled When Wanderers Cease to Roam by Vivian Swift. It quickly was added to my library hold list. Sometimes I love a good surprise and that's exactly what occurred upon flipping through this title for the first time. Vivian shares a year of journaling with each chapter representing a month detailed with stories, facts, memories, quotes, sketches, embroderies, watercolours and more. This is the kind of book you don't want to end, but even better it's also the kind of book that can be read again and again.

Side note: A 2nd book in the works by Vivian is That Damn France Book.

Upon returning, I'm excited to share some photographs and ideas I've been writing down. During this wee pause from blogging it felt good to be a little more silent, listen, collect words, and see/feel inspiration. Thank you for all your comments and emails during my break. It was really lovely to hear from you and greatly appreciated.

A few weeks ago, J. and I went to the closing night of short films at SIFF. It was pretty neat to see a round up of the best ones. 2 films stood out to me and I wish that I could give you links to be able to watch them entirely, but they are not available yet. Here is my list:
1. Balloons, walks, and books always bring a smile to my face.
2. In the past few years, I've become more confident with cooking/baking. I love it now.
3. I'm fond of A Celebration by Georgia O'Keeffe and Monk By the Sea by Caspar David Friedrich.
4. Collecting memories, poems, and quotes in a journal is a favourite thing to do.
5. I adore mixed matched white plates from thrift shops.
6. Maps and globes are fascinating to me especially as J. and I are planning a trip in Autumn.
7. The most played soundtracks on my ipod are Amelie and The Royal Tenenbaums.

In keeping with the theme of today, I also wanted to share a lovely book recently released titled She Walks in Beauty by Caroline Kennedy. Over the years, Caroline has taken the time to bring several books of poetry loved by family members and herself. A tradition and genuine gift to them is a poem given to another. This book is an anthology full of poems fitting for different ages, moments, and times in life. It is a beautiful collection.

The blooms bursting around town are pretty fantastic. They bring a smile often. Some good things about today have been: shifted plants around the house, walked with J. to the library, made a new terrarium, ate a wonderful orange, spoke with a friend, cooked together with J., and read The New Yorker.

Recently I bought a bunch of colorful tulips and what a delight it is to watch them gradually open up. Spring makes me think of flowers, sunshine, rain, scarves, skirts, bare legs, knee highs, farmers' markets, planting, kite flying, salads, jumping in puddles, weekend excursions, reading, outside/inside, and more. Simply put, plans made have an A, B, or C. With this all-over-the-place kind of weather given, I find myself embracing the spontaniety that each day brings. What do you love about Spring?

Lately, my reading has been focused on words that are compact, beautiful and in a smaller package by two authors. I've had a love for years with short stories and essays. They do magic for me without the guilt of not finishing...these I can always finish.

The first pick is Colm Toibin's The Empty Family which has been hitting the mark perfectly. His books are full of irresistable, gorgeous writing and scenerios that only Toibin can convey so so eloquently. The second pick is M.F.K. Fisher's The Art of Eating, a solid volume of 5 books. In the past, there has been some wonderful dabbling in reading her stories, but now I'm ready for each and every single one. Savoring the delicious words of this brilliant lady is fulfilling. To say the least, I'm enchanted with both books these days.

It's hard to believe how fast a year can go by and yet, here it is... little postcards is turning 2! These past 12 months have been a time for growing/stretching further with different film and cameras in hand, enjoying what is present, simplifying, and creating weekly. Knowing the journey is always ongoing, it feels really good to look forward to whatever may be ahead. Thank you dear friends and readers for your shared inspiration, words, and ideas. It wouldn't be the same without you.

This week has been quite distracting with pieces of bad news that swooped in quickly. It definitely threw me for a loop of highs and lows... but thankfully, there is the bright side of train travel soon and visiting a close friend in Portland. Friends make such a sweet difference in our lives.

Recently, I decided to put together another pinboard on pinterest called the library. The library is being created from books and films discovered, carefully chosen, and well-loved. The first time I laid eyes on the Arctic Club Hotel (here in Seattle) was a delight. Finding walruses combined with gorgeous architecture is spectacular. This past Saturday, J. and I made our way to the hotel just before the sun was setting. I hope you enjoy these shots.

This past week was particularly busy as well as exciting because I began a wonderful job working with conservation and ecology classes in an education department. Images with blurs, lines, or shadows have been catching my eye lately. This photograph was taken a couple winters back. The lines of a tree etched in snow really stood out with the quietude of evening. Winter brings such a different depth of beauty to enjoy.

Last week I bought an NPR title called This I Believe: On Love edited by Dan Gediman from the series This I Believe that began in the 1950's by Edward R. Murrow. The program was started with the idea to collect essays from people of all areas of life sharing what is important to them day to day. They have more than 90,000 essays today. This I Believe: On Love is a gem to read. Since each story is only 2 to 4 pages long, J. and I decided to read one a day together. I love the variety of perspectives and ideas given while encompassing all the different forms that love is.

Three other books I highly recommend from this series = This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women edited by Jay Allison, This I Believe II edited by Jay Allison and Edward R. Murrow's This I Believe.

Last month I found a free fern pattern and decided to give it a try. One of the best parts about the process was being able to listen to radio programs as the small stitches formed something more. In the past, I remember doing many cross-stitch projects as a little girl and then promptly giving them away. This one though I'd like to keep. For the future I think it would be lovely to make more designs and end up with a nature collection in frames.

Yesterday was a day for celebrating good things happening and feeling grateful. So today the words thank you have been on my mind.

Years ago, I read about an idea called "the-wait-a-moment-club" which means instead of rushing to say thank you, you wait a moment or two. To put this idea into play you might write a letter to send in the mail, pick up the phone to call a day later with thoughts of thankfulness, or give an act of service. Of course, there are exceptions and it could be rather dreadful to not say thanks right away given the situation. But, for the times it can work to wait a moment, well I believe it is a wonderful way to go. Being a fan of letter writing, I am trying to do it more often especially for thank you notes or just because on a rainy day.

Since I don't have all of your addresses to send a card, the next best thing is writing to you here. Thank you dear readers for your comments and even to those of you who are quieter. It means a great deal to me hearing your words often. I hope your Autumn week is a good one.

Recently while reading a close friends blog, I noticed she started a theme of saying what she was thankful for each day. I love the idea of taking time to identify the things that are meaningful whether small or big in our lives. There now sits a glass mason jar on my kitchen table that I am filling each day with thoughts jotted on scraps of paper. This morning I added a simple one: I am thankful for the beauty of Autumn leaves. Happy Friday.

Last week, J. and I visited Disneyland. It was wonderfully fun especially experiencing rides like The Matterhorn Bobsleds, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
